Coming into week 5 we had gotten a lot done. The CAD model has been completed, save for a few modifications that we might make later on. The discussion in class was focused on CAE analysis techniques. While we have not yet learned how to do them on our own, it did give us a few ideas of the types of analysis we will need to perform upon our model.
CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)
The person wearing our mask needs to be able to breathe through the mask, so we need to make sure that enough air is making it through the filter. We also need to understand how the air flows into the mask, to make sure that it is reaching the mouth and nose. If this part of the mask isn't working, the entire thing would be obsolete. One of our goals for the next week is to finish this part of the analysis.
2.FEA (Finite Element Analysis)
The mask will be under stress each day it's used. The mask is being pressed onto the face due to the strap, it will be handled through adjustments to the position during the day, and it needs to withstand being taken apart to change the filter. Additionally, it potentially needs to be sanitized. All of these things cause considerable stress to the mask, and the FEA will allow us to know which parts of the mask are under the most stress during various amounts of pressure and tension. We will be able to determine if mask as is can withstand the amounts of stress that we foresee, and we will also be able to determine if we need to modify the mask in any way to make it stronger.
While there are no physical deliverables this week, we feel that we are in a good place to move forward into the next week. We have a plan to finish our analysis of the product, and we have a plan to actually fabricate the parts of the product that will be possible under the current circumstances. Thanks for joining us on this journey of discovery!
