It's an exciting week in the life of team 8! Coming into week 7 we wanted to finish all of our design and testing, and we did! Our mask assembly has been completed, our stress tests on the filter components have been completed, and it's time to upload each component into the slicer to determine if they are ready for 3D printing.

The 4 components to be 3D printed are our filter top, filter middle, filter base, and the filter gasket. All 4 components are pictured below, as well as the assembly.

After finishing and testing each part, they were uploaded into Ultimaker Cura to be sliced for 3D printing. We scaled down the parts by 30% so that they would fit in our constraint of 3x3x3 inches, and prepared them for printing. Most of the parts require some sort of support to be able to print, as a 3D printer cannot print an overhang at more than 45 degrees, so we experimented with the best ways to create the supports. In the end, we ended up creating Gcode files that will take anywhere from 20 minutes (the gasket) to 2.5 hours (the bottom component) to print.

Pictured is the fully sliced filter top. This piece will take 15 grams of PLA, and 3.3 hours to print.

Now that each component has been modeled, and prepared for printing, the only thing left to do is wait. Next week we expect to have each piece printed, and we will be able to have a physical prototype. During Week 7 we also began to work on our final report, and began to prepare our presentation. For week 8 we will finish our report and presentation as well as touch up on any changes we want to make. Thanks again for following our progress, and we are so excited to share with you the final product!
