On Friday after lab, we met as a group to decide on the work that we wanted to get done during the week. Based on the deliverables required, and the progress we need to make to stay on track, the following needed to be done.

1. 2D Sketch

2. Background Research

3. Gantt Chart

4. Continued Work on the website

We split up the work according to the estimated amount of time each piece would require, and agreed to meet on Monday to discuss. Matt created the 2D sketch, Andrew created the Gantt chart and worked on the website, and Ethan and Jack split the background research.

Due to some technical difficulties with Internet, we were unable to meet as a group on Monday, but utilizing Slack to update each other on the progress, we decided that we could postpone the meeting until Friday.

Background Research (Ethan Smith / Jack Perry)

The main extent of the research this week went into finding the basis for materials that we are considering for each component of the mask. This week we mostly focused on the main portion of the mask design, and the research was centered around this. In the material that would be in direct contact with the face, we found that the best material for comfort and minimal irritation would be silicon. We potentially would need to create an alternative to be allergy friendly. For the material of the rest of the main portion, the material we are considering is PLA. It is a cheaper printing material, and a good alternative for ABS, as it is biodegradable. PLA is also known for printing accuracy, which is a key point for a thin, delicate mask. Additionally, PLA will make the design more flexible, resilient and increase sustainability, We also looked a little into the size of the mask, but we haven't come to a conclusion on the size quite yet.

At the conclusion of this week of work, we were able to deliver several crucial items. Our 2D sketch establishes a model for us to work off of as we begin to create our 3D model in Fusion. The background research provides us with a good idea of the materials we want to use, as well as some of the crucial dimensions that we need to focus on (such as the standard filter size). The Gantt Chart will provide a timeline for us, to allow us to estimate how much time we expect certain components will take, and to provide a structure for how quickly we will progress.

Check back in next week to see the progress we make on the first iteration of our 3 dimensional model!
